WRAPS—Helping Girls Stay in School

WRAPS Helping Girls Stay in School
Picture
The Ethiopian government estimates that up to 90% of rural girls do not have access to clean sanitary pads. Many girls are missing up to four days of school each month due to this problem. By 7th and 8th grade many girls drop out of school because they have fallen so far behind in their studies.
Ethiopia
Team Up to Support
In 2013, two teachers, Allison Karnes of N. Muskegon, Michigan, USA and Ingeborg Roth of Aalesund, Norway, teamed up to create WRAPS; a sanitary pad for the schoolgirls of Ethiopia. During the school year, they travel to the real middle schools and meet with 5-8th-grade girls teaching them about menstruation, feminine hygiene and how to take care of their new WRAPS.
A Simple Solution
WRAPS are Washable, Reusable, Affordable sanitary Pads.
WRAPS are made of 100% cotton cloth. Each school kit contains 6 pads, a new pair of panties, along with one small waterproof purse for the girls to carry their WRAPS to and from school.
You Can Help
Your contribution CAN make a life-changing difference!
100% of your tax deductible gift will be used for WRAPS.

The Wolaitta Village project goals are to create sustainable businesses within the Wolaitta Community that will generate income for their children’s homes. Our dream is to offer free WRAPS kits to every middle school girl within the Wolaitta Zone of approximately 3 million people.

WRAPS utilizes a four-prong approach to help eliminate the inherent disadvantages that women face in Ethiopia.
  1. We educate girls about their menstrual period.
  2. Secondly, we encourage girls to stay in school and finish their education.
  3. Thirdly we are ecologically friendly by making a washable, reusable pad.
  4. Finally, it is our desire to create jobs for women and become a sustainable business that can exist without outside support.

Amazing Amy

Amy Peters

Local Shopkeeper, Amy Peters, takes big leaps

I first introduced myself to Amy Peters, owner of industrie clothiers, by Facebook Messenger several months ago. I'm fairly certain I've never approached someone I've never met before and said, "I want to work for you," and yet, I felt certain about it.

industrie clothiers
One week prior to contacting Amy, a friend told me about a new clothing store in town and I just had to go see for myself. Located on the outer edges of west Olympia on Harrison Ave, industrie clothiers is part of a small cluster of businesses, one being the legendary Blue Heron Bakery.

Amy is courageous and on the move. It might be her long legs or classy boots that allow Amy to take big leaps forward, but I think ultimately it's courage. Just 10 months after the grand opening of her 1,300 square foot store in Olympia, she's launched an even larger store in her second capitol-city location, Salem, Oregon, last weekend. A young mother of two beautiful children, Amy seemingly juggles it all seamlessly with big strides and confidence.

She's a big-picture girl with 17 years of experience as a department manager and buyer for a major Northwest retailer. Putting her experience to work and utilizing her relationships with suppliers, Amy offers top-quality contemporary clothing at discount prices for women, men and children.

Amy Peters
Personally, when I was young I used to have visions of running a store cash register. I'm fairly certain Amy's visions as a child involved blue prints and spreadsheets with a much larger plan in mind.

Nellie Heay
How can she possibly do it all? I had to ask. Amy is a master at delegation and puts her trust and faith in her store managers to do a good job. When you have time, take a moment and stop by to meet Nellie Heay, manager of her Olympia location. Nellie is a vivacious, talented individual in her own right. Along with managing the Olympia industrie clothiers, she's a mother of two and a part-time photographer.

Did I forget to mention . . . it's also a fantastic clothing store – exactly what Olympia has been waiting for.

Our Communities

The Ripple Effect
What we do in the circle of our communities, whether within our families, close friends, or communities at large, has a lasting ripple effect. It can be the smallest action; a look or glance, or simply extending a hand at the right moment. We're often unaware of the impact our actions have on others until sometime later, if at all.

Rallying Support
Sometime ago a friend 'pointed me' towards the need of another close friend, Tim, who needed a web presence as a platform to offer his services to his community. I rallied the support of another close friend, Dia Sabella, a copy editor/writer, and together the three of us, Tim, myself, and Dia, strategized a plan of action. Needless to say, none of us could have done it without the other.

A fourth voice showed up in the conversation while volleying emails back and forth and asked, "Why are you calling him Timmy?"

I felt similarly, "And who are YOU in the mix and what is your role?"

Thus, entered Roger, a brain health specialist and valuable asset to our team, living nearby in Tim's community. He brought a unique perspective that none of us had. They say it takes a tribe, and indeed, it did.

Team Effort
What started as a simple, "Yes, I can help," evolved into a rich team of four, all doing their best towards a common goal. There is nothing more satisfying than 'playing ball' with a finely tuned team.

The Gold That Surfaces
I take a moment to share this story now as it is often sometimes later when the gold surfaces. I received a thank you note from Tim this week that touched me deeply.
Thank You
Thank you

Picture
I've learned much, and the first was that friends want to help in that best way, and the second thing is I can still keep my pride and say "Yes, I need help," and say "Thank you for loving and helping me."

Shining Light in Dark Places

Positive Change

Shining light in dark places can be more challenging in some arenas than others. I work with a team of professionals who excel in their field; the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs (WCSAP). Their job is to educate and support the folks in their industry in helping to prevent child sexual abuse. I can't think of a more worthy cause.

By the time one of their projects lands on my 'designer' desk, it's been imagined, researched, collected and gathered, as well as funded. I often only realize the depth and breath of the project when I'm nearing completion. It's then that I have to pause, stand back a bit and take in the  magnitude of the good work they do for all of us.

We recently worked on several publications together that stood out in the crowd.

PISC
PISC, Partners in Social Change, is a publication that goes out to support the advocates in the field throughout the state of Washington.

The focus and emphasis of this issue is on creating and supporting healthy kids, empowered families, and engaged communities in helping to prevent child sexual abuse.

It's an amazing resource for those in the field and an uplifting publication – shining light in dark places.

Start the Conversation
Start the Conversation is a small booklet published in English and Spanish to help parents of young children start the conversation about child sexual abuse.

Again, it's an amazing, valuable resource for parents to help build awareness in their children – shining more light in dark places.

Poster Series
While working so closely with the WCSAP staff to design their publications, we also generate a lot of graphics and messaging to accompany each article. It helped me 'put the projects to bed' by designing a poster series for the staff's offices.

January in Mexico

Working with Cori Jacobs

I travel to Mexico during the month of January for many reasons. Indeed, it's a vacation, and it's also a retreat to collect myself anew and remember what inspires me.

Over these many years I've had the pleasure of being on the sidelines and witnessing a local artist, Cori Jacobs, expand and grow. I first saw her work in a small gallery mid-town Sayulita. In several  years, she opened her own gallery, Cori Jacobs Gallery, on the south end of town.
Cori is an amazing artist on all fronts and exceptionally productive. She has a full line of paintings, wearables and tableware. Each of her paintings carries a story of her travels around the globe. Her clothing line carries her stories as well as her tableware.

Her website is a feast for the eyes and worthy of taking a moment to click and see.

Complete Marketing Package

Playing Ball
Designing with another is an organic process; a nip or tuck, a pull or tug, in this direction or that. It's about communication and timeliness. There's a 'sweet spot' in design work when everything falls into place effortlessly. It's a combination of the right words and pic to illustrate an essence . . . but it's mostly about the synergy of 'playing ball' with my client. I know we've all experienced it from time to time and those moments are memorable. They stick with us and we yearn to re-create them again and again. Working with Matt to create his complete marketing package was just such a dance. Matt was clear, direct and ready to get 'er done from the moment we met, and that we did from start to finish.

Complete Marketing Package
A complete package contains the tools to cover all of the bases in print and web.  Whether you meet someone on the street and pass along your business card, or have a stack of rack cards to place in a display rack, it's great to have the perfect tool for the job.

How do you say elegant?

Rapunzel's bu-tek

Creating a sense of elegance on the web is similar to 'getting dressed for the occasion'.  You start by pooling your resources; dress, shoes, and accessories. With any luck, you're dressed to the nines when you step out the door.

On the web, it's the combination of colors, layout, messaging . . . but, most importantly, it's the quality of photos. I often say, "A website builds itself with great photos to work with."

Dee Zehnder Ruggirello
Dee Zehnder Ruggirello, owner of Rapunzel's bu-tek
A 3-Stage Plan
I recently worked with Dee Zehnder Ruggierllo, owner of Rapunzel's bu-tek in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Our goal was to  rebrand her web presence and bring a sense of 'style and elegance' to her audiences' experience. We met over the summer and designed a 3-stage plan to implement over the coming year.
  • Change her business name from Rapunzel's Unique Gifts and Yarn to Rapunzel's bu-tek, to better reflect her offerings.
  • Rebrand her website, setting the stage to expand in the future and offer selected products for each of her collections.
  • Incorporate her new brand messaging into her already existing retail store through custom product lines and print materials.

Resources
After our meeting, Dee returned home in search of the perfect photographer. She hired local photographer, Cassie Nicole Photography and Design, and pulled in her niece as a model. Skill, talent and beauty created the priceless photo resources that became the foundation of her new rebranding.

Holding the Vision
As we move into 2014, Dee is holding the vision when she shops the world market place. She's keeping her eye out for those unique one-of-a-kind products as featured treasures for her collections on her website.  She'll keep us posted through her newsletter and Facebook page. If you want to stay informed about those unique treasures, you might want to join her list! [wink]

With over 40 years of experience as a potter and 40+ wholesale distributors across the US, Loren is not only a well-seasoned potter, he's definitely has a flare for marketing as well.

Loren and I have worked together  for 7 years.  We work well together.  I certainly feel like I know him. And yet, this past weekend, I met Loren for the first time when I stopped by his Holiday Art Sale and Open House at his studio, Brace Point Pottery in West Seattle.  It was such a pleasure to finally meet him along with the 3 other participating artists; James Brooke and Reid Ozaki, pottery and Cheryl deGroot, jewelry. Seeing the work of these artists in person brought a new appreciation for their unique style, craftsmanship, and beauty they bring into the world.

Take a moment and visit Loren's new website.  It's a pile of beautiful images of his work.

A Fun, Across-the-Board, Facelift

11/26/2013

How do you bring 'fun' to your brand essence?
Starting with a good set of ingredients makes it that much easier.

I recently worked with Chris and Jennie McDonald, owners of Lifespan Construction, to update the brand for their already-successful company.  A couple of key elements that made all of the difference are:
  1. Chris and Jennie are both confident, competent, fun by nature, and willing to 'push the envelope'.
  2. Their company is up and running and already successful.
Chris and Jennie McDonald
Chris and Jennie McDonald
Designing and collecting the parts and pieces (fonts, colors, graphics, pics) for Chris and Jennie's update was a bit like shopping for grandma's secret sauce recipe.

LOGO
Although their logo had served them well . . . we made a few updates; changed the colors, swapped out the graphic elements, and opted to keep the same font for brand continuity.
Picture
TAGLINE
Their new tagline, nurture, inspire, quality – adds a sense of warmth and ease.
nurture, inspire, quality
PHOTOS
Their website is chockful of colorful, fun, pics; dogs, frogs, and family – bringing their site to life.

Adding a great online-project portfolio, pics of their crew, client testimonials, a fun "pssst . . . did you know?"  blog campaign, along with the family dog, (he made two guest appearances), all help to nurture and inspire a sense of confidence and ease that truly represent Chris and Jennie's personalities and talents.

What a pleasure for me as well!
